Flea Facts

Fleas! Just seeing the word makes me want to itch. Fleas, Mites, Lice and Ticks love making a home on the skin of a animal or human and call it their new home to start mating.  Once they have placed up the welcome sign, we start seeing itching and scratching then comes the skin irritation caused by the flea bites.  Some pets have also been known to chew off patches of fur to get to the skin where you can find red, irritated bumpy or even crusty areas where a possible allergy your pet shows or irritation. This is known as flea allergy dermatitis or FAD.

Adult female fleas can start to lay eggs within a day of making herself home with a bite. Eggs can drop off the pet and become concentrated in the pet's favorite spots along with flea dirt. Within the eggs hatch, the larvae feed on the flea dirt and then enter a cocooned stage. The cocoons are very hardy and the fleas in them can go dormant for months, having in whichever conditions they're comfortable in.

When the flea cocoons are in the environment which would be deep into carpets or floor cracks a sing round of treatment won't likely kill them all. Any survivors can emerge again and begin the whole process again.  They're different species of fleas, such as cat flea and dog flea
will be happy to feed off of any cat, dog or person if it's preferred host is not available. So if your dog brings home fleas, he could share them with everyone in the house! Fleas can hatch rides on people as well, so having an "indoor only" pet is no guarantee of staying flea free.

Because fleas are hard to get rid of, all pets should be protected with flea infestation medication. Most effective products exist to control fleas and some even only kill adult fleas, while others also stop eggs from hatching; some are specifically for dogs and some also protect against other parasites. Your veterinarian can help you choose what products work best for your pet.
